US Department of Energy — Hydrogen
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has extensively documented hydrogen production technologies, including on-board electrolysis and its applications in vehicle fuel supplementation. The DOE's hydrogen programme covers production, delivery, storage, conversion and end-use technologies.
Key DOE findings relevant to HFS systems:
- Hydrogen addition to diesel combustion reduces NOx and particulate matter emissions
- On-board electrolysis provides a viable source of supplemental hydrogen for combustion improvement
- Water electrolysis using electrical energy from the vehicle alternator/battery is energy-positive when fuel savings exceed the electrical energy consumed
